The Pattern Handbook

The patterns handbook: Techniques, strategies and applications. Collected and introduced by Linda Rising With contributions by JimCoplien, DougLea, ?. Please add your name if you hang around here, this is too big a job for one person

As a newcomer in the patterns community, a user not a writer and an outsider to a lot the stories, I enjoyed this book very much. A rich collection of articles that give you the real taste of what it's all about. The what, how, why, it's all there.

Glad I didn't wait for the indexed edition , Linda. :-)
