Wiki Translator

We have some serious encoding problems here... 2 seems okay in ISO-8859-1 (or 15), but many of the others are littered with the UTF-8 encoding of Unicode REPLACEMENT CHARACTER (U+FFFD), and then near the bottom there's some German text in apparently correct UTF-8. There's other pages where I have to manually tell my browser to use 8859-1, but this page isn't even consistent. Hey, Ward! If Wiki's so well factored, it shouldn't be too hard to fix the encoding issues, right?

Ward switched servers in May 2006, which changed his web server setup from reporting no encoding (defaulting to Latin1) to reporting UTF-8 encoding. This is getting fixed the way all wiki pages get fixed, little by little as people notice. (There is a bug with � (o-acute) however.)
BTW: check out TranslateWiki for a script that can detect the language and translate some pages to English.

[1, en] I got here by RecentChanges, and it was empty. I was thinking this would be a page that would allow WikiZens to translate spoken language. It would generally take a while to get your thoughts translated, but you might get a more accurate translations. -- SteveHowell

Generalement, avec cette approche, il faudrait beacuoup de temps pour faire traduire ses pensées, mais peut-être on reçoit de meilleures traductions.

En general habrá alguna demora en la traduccion de tus pensamientos, pero tal vez obtendrías una traducci�n más precisa.

[4, de, translation of 1] Ich bin über RecentChanges hierher gekommen und es war leer. Ich dachte, das könnte eine Seite sein, die es WikiZens ermöglicht natürliche Sprachen zu übersetzen. Es wird wohl eine Weile dauern seine Gedanken übersetzt zu bekommen, aber die übersetzungen könnten korrekter sein.

[5, nl, translation of 1] Ik ben via RecentChanges gekomen, maar alles was leeg. Ik dachte dat men deze pagina kon gebruiken om vertalingen in zijn eigen taal te krijgen. Het zal zeker langer duren, maar je krijgt er een betere vertaling mee.

[6, en, comment on 2] The French translation above seems very iffy. I've corrected some obvious mistakes ("ice" for "ici", "traduir" for "traduire", etc), but even so it doesn't look very idiomatic. I'm not a native French speaker myself, so I haven't attempted any non-trivial improvements. Translating this paragraph may be interesting.

[7, fr, translation of 6] La traduction en Français, ci-dessus, a l'air un peu limite. J'ai corrigé les bourdes les plus évidentes ("ice" au lieu de "ici", "traduir" au lieu de "traduire", etc.); ça n'a toujours pas l'air naturel. Ne parlant pas Français moi-même, je ne me suis pas hasardé à des améliorations non triviales. Par contre, traduire ce paragraphe pourrait s'avérer intéressant.

[8, de, translation of 6] Obige französische übersetzung scheint mir zweifelhaft. Ich habe einige offensichtliche Fehler korrigiert ("ici" statt "ice", "traduire" statt "traduir", u.s.w.), aber auch so schaut es nicht sonderlich idiomatisch aus. Ich bin kein Muttersprachler, also habe ich keine nichttrivialen Verbesserungen versucht. Diesen Absatz zu übersetzen könnte interessant sein.

[9, en, translation of 7] The translation in French, above, has the a little limiting air. I corrected the most obvious boobs (" ice " instead of " here ", " to traduir " instead of " translating ", etc.); that still does not have the natural air. Not speaking French myself, I did not venture myself with noncommonplace improvements. On the other hand, to translate this paragraph could prove to be interesting. [10, en, comment on 3] The Spanish translation is not very good. Common mistakes with prepositions ("by" translated as "por" instead of as "a través de"), tenses ("it was empty" should be "estaba vacía", not "estuvo vacía"), and the subjunctive aspect ("this would be a page" should be "esta sería una página", not "esta será"). --MatiasGiovannini

After reading it (the Wiki page, not the book), I still don't know why. Please explain.
