Three Strikes And You Refactor

Note that some people take the more aggressive approach of refactoring the first time you see duplication.

Every occurrence of similarity or differentiability has an opportunity to refactor, So RefactorMercilessly. Refactoring is not something that happens once - it happens continually. It's very in line with evolution. Nature didn't stop genetic (design) mutation (refactor) for billions of years. The practice of software development is just a few decades old. -- NitinVerma

The parallels with nature only go so far. The natural world is full of redundancies. From genomes to bird species, nature loves throwing bandwidth at the problem. Carrying the argument to its logical conclusion, it would seem that whatever code survives and propagates is the "right" solution.

If bad code survives and propagates, this is only a locally "right" solution. It's an island species, protected from competition and predators only by geographic happenstance. As soon as better code comes along, either within the same organisation or (more likely) within a competing organisation, the bad code will die, one way or another, as its parent organisation hurts from the total-cost-of-ownership it induces.

Whatever survive and propagated in what I've worked on, should die, a very horrible death. One that is felt by the programmer that did so and left years ago. Also, propagation leaves junk. Copying and pasting data leaves junk data. Copying and pasting (which happens often in evolution) leaves junk DNA. It appears genetics don't refactor. I don't see anything in the cell that re-evaluates its own DNA. Just reads it like a credit card. "Oh, Self destruct. Well that doesn't sound right. Oh well, cancer here we come."

You missed the point. The cancer *is* the re-evaluation mechanism, along with all the other subtle nuances of survivability that DNA grants its hosting organism.'


The ability to distinguish between similar and identical is key here. Also, you have to tolerate a certain amount of idiomatic duplication.

Concur. Particularly if there is just enough difference in the actual work being accomplished that your <ahem> "refactoring" makes the original procedure or whatever more effort to use, test, debug, and maintain than two separate but more easily handled pieces.
