A country attributed by many rumors to contain quite a nest of hackers and virus authors, dating from the ColdWar. -- PhlIp

Original text (which I take on trust):

Romania is a friendly-people country that enjoys the freedom obtained after revolting against the oppressive regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. This event is marked in the history of Romania with the Revolution of 1989 that removed from power a 45 years' dictator. The new government has also a new Constitution (1991) that was amended in 2004. It separated the powers in the state (Legislative, Juridical, Executive), it abolished the death penalty, it gave rights to women, dignity and power to people, and the most wanted, freedom of speech.

There are numerous parties' representatives present in the government located in Bucharest, the capital. The entire political force strives for a faster transition to the market economy and succeeded partially to gain trust and work hard for its goals. Newly, Romania is part of NATO forces and it strives to become a member of the European Union in 2007. With hopes for better life conditions, most of the Romanians choose in need to work in more than one place, which was not allowed before 1989. Some of them emigrate or temporarily study and work outside the country to return later with strong foreign currency. Inflation is one of the issues of this society. The population's trust in the American dollar or the European Euro is much higher than in the Romanian "leu" ("lion" in translation).

The Romanian culture is very rich, as its history goes back in time to when the Roman Empire conquered the territory. Thus, Romanian is a latin language that survived like an island among Slavic languages. As a tourist in this country, one will not be lost as English and French are widely spoken by the generations up to 35-40 years old. Romanians do appreciate foreigners who try to speak their language ("How are you?" is translated "Ce faci?" che-fachi; the answer "Good" is "Bine" bee-ne) and strong friendships are tied after proving good intentions. One of the characteristics of Romanians is skepticism but lately it remained valid only for the politicians. The abundant flux of information and technology from the West is so fast absorbed by people who want to know what lies beyond the country's borders.

The most reliable sources for the economy are agriculture (do not pass the Romanian wine), highly-skilled labor, heavy industry and lately, tourism. Romania has wonderful unforgettable sights to see, especially in the Carpathian mountains. Transylvania is the heart of the country, Moldova (not Republic of Moldova which was part of Romania before the second war) has great monasteries, Muntenia has impressive architecture, Oltenia has beautiful valleys and Dobrogea, history and its Black Sea.

One visit to Romania will bring you back, as the spirit and safety of the country, its traditions, artisans and sometimes rough life are things that most of us want sometimes to go back to: our roots.
