In his paper "GeneralisingMonadsToArrows," John Hughes introduced the notion of "arrows" which provide an abstract view of computation and are intended as a generalization/an alternative to monads for structuring combinator libraries (see HaskellLanguage, MonadicProgramming, OnMonads and HaskellArrows (http://www.haskell.org/arrows/).
