Furry Kef

My name is Kef Li Eric Marcus X Schecter. (Or if you insist on the mundane RealName on my birth certificate, Kevin Lee Fields.) My handle on Wiki is FurryKef because my handle has become universal: that's my name everywhere on the 'net now. :) (Actually, it's properly "furrykef", but I use FurryKef on CamelCased wikis and on AOL Instant Messenger.)

If you wish to contact me, you may want to contact me at my WikiPedia user talk page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Furrykef).

Welcome. How will you be signing here? I recommend you set your username cookie using http:wikiOptions.

Hmm. I did that already, but apparently the cookie was not retained. -- FurryKef

Oh - perhaps your browser is set up to delete all cookies each time you exit from it.

You may use "furrykef" everywhere else, but this wiki prefers people to either use RealNamesPlease or remain anonymous. Respecting Wiki's SocialNorms? will save yourself and others from useless argument. [A tip: flouting a community's conventions is not the way to create a good first impression.]

Yes, I'm aware. This is why I bothered to state my "mundane name" on this page. Is that acceptable? I just find recognizability of the name to be far more important than its real-ness. At first I thought about signing my posts as -- Kef (FurryKef), but that just felt entirely redundant... -- FurryKef

[I suppose you could use the initials "Fk"! It's the "Furry" bit that takes a bit of getting used to.]

Please use your RealName, not initials. ShortWikiSignaturesSmell.

What if I sign, say, "KLX (FurryKef)"? It still uses initials, but the initals are (likely) unique and coupled with a UserName, avoiding the ShortWikiSignaturesSmell problems. If I must, I'll sign "Kevin Fields (FurryKef)", but I find that silly, longish, and unnecessary, when my RealName - both of them ;) - can be found very easily. -- FurryKef

[This is a tolerant site - but it might seem a bit odd to encounter a debate between, say, FurryKef, BaldPat and TorneWuff. Which ones are to be taken seriously?]

The owner and maintainer of this site has stated that he prefers that people use their RealName to sign contributions (if they sign at all). Seeing as how he's providing this service for free, and it costs him time and money to keep the WikiWikiWeb running, acceding to his wishes is a way to pay him due respect.

Since you're most concerned about recognizability of your handle, all you need to do to maintain the connection is to rename this page to KevinFields? while preserving its mention of your FurryKef persona. People will still be able to find you here as FurryKef (through Google or a WikiWikiWeb search), and then can find the rest of your Wiki contributions through BackLinks to your Wiki home page.

The idea is that your Wiki life is supposed to reflect your professional and/or academic life, and not your fantasy persona. But at the same time, forcing an ObsoleteRealName doesn't accomplish much. So, if your boss, family, etc call you Kef, then KefFields? might work.

In that case, KefX might be appropriate, since I sign "serious" writing with it except when circumstances demand otherwise (since my identification does have my "mundane" name, but I intend to change it some day). In my last year of high school I did sign my work as "Kef Fields-X", an odd hybrid of my names. - Kef
