Wine Compatibility Layer

WINE is not an emulator. It is an OpenSource compatibility layer that aims to host MicrosoftWindows applications without the MS supplied operating system, on a IX host OS such as LinuxOs that executes on the Intel x86 platform.

WINE is not a mechanism to get windows device drivers to work on x86 based UnixOs, doing so would have required previledged access to the processor not made available under WINE.

An FAQ for WINE is located at http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wine-faq/index

A Jan02 article on use of WineCompatibilityLayer can be seen at http://www.samag.com/documents/s=1824/sam0201a/0201a.htm

A Mar05 whitepaper on migration from MS world is found at http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT2779208064.html

Feb 06: The WINE beta is out and works spectacularly well.
