Weni Widi Wiki

People have seen "Veni, Vidi, Vici" which JuliusCaesar? is reputed to have said. It means "I came, I saw, I conquered." The trouble is that LatinLanguage pronounced Vs like we EnglishLanguage speakers say Ws. Therefore, it would have come out more like you probably read the title of this page.

So what did Ward conquer?

See WikiRewritesHistory.

Classical latin lacked the v sound. The letter V in fact represents the vowel u. The modern U and W are later inventions. As the Latins pronounced V "you" you can see why W is called "double-you."

Can any of the modern Romance descendants match the wonderful alliteration of the original. I'm thinking of Spanish: vení, vi, conquisté which definitely lacks that je ne sais quoi.
