The Montreal XP Group - Where Are We Going?

Recent meetings of the Montreal XP group have become unfocused and poorly attended. If we wish to keep this group going, that will have to change. Vincent and Bob have proposed a project for creating XP tools for JIRA. (See http://sourceforge.net/projects/xptools/) but we have not proceeded anywhere with that yet.

Please add your comments here and at our next meeting (February 5th, 2004) we should be prepared to make some decisions about the group.

I have also been discussing with the Montreal Agile Users group, and I think we should merge. I basically want to organize the group around 3 areas: the library, the science room and the coffee room. More on that next meeting.

I would like to continue to meet and discuss XP. However, I am not interested in talking about tools or software that could be built in an XP way. I have a ton of personal projects that I never have enough time to work on as it is. I'm not sure really how to rejuvenate the group but I will make myself available for discussion.

I hope there are more than three people who are interested in keeping the group going otherwise I don't hold out much hope!! If you are interested, please indicate it here!!! (Even if you don't have something to add yet.)

Things the group could consider

Presentations as we had when the group started (many could be repeated and updated since we have had many new attendees since then.) Activities - games, role playing etc. Q & A periods to discuss XP implementation issues Working sub-groups to develop more formal presentations, projects etc. (These sub-groups could use the main group to "test" their ideas.)

We should return to regular once a month meetings for the whole group. If we decide to have sub-groups, these groups could select another time and even place for their meetings. Meetings will need to have an agenda and we need to assure that there is time for Q&A and war stories at the end (rather then at the beginning)

Iain, I don't think the XP projects was an all or nothing idea for the group and would probably be best as a sub-group of the main group. The projects were deliberatly going to be small and be addons to existing tools to leverage them for use in an XP environment. In that way we might actually develop something some of us could use in our working environment.

Je suis toujours très intéressé par le groupe même si pour des raisons personelles, je ne peux plus me rendre aux réunions. Je pense que d'autres personnes ne se rendent plus au groupe car ils sont très occupés professionellement. C'est en soit un bon signe que l'activité économique a bien repris à Montréal. Est-ce que cela veut dire qu'il faut arrêter les activités du groupe ? Je ne le crois pas. Je crois qu'au contraire, il faut essayer de profiter de cette embéllie pour faire encore plus passer les valeurs XP dans nos organisations professionelles. Le groupe pourrait être un lieu où on échangerait nos récentes expériences.

Des initiatives comme xptools doivent également être poursuivies. Ce genre d'initiatives peuvent être faite en dehors des réunions. Elles ne dépendent que de leur champion (Vincent) pour vivre.

J'ai pris connaissance de l'existence du groupe seulement la semaine dernière. Malgré ça et le fait que je suis en cours le jeudi soir, je suis content de savoir qu'il y a possibilité que des gens puissent se rencontrer pour discuter XP, et logiciels à Montréal. J'espère que le groupe survivra et que je pourrai participer à l'une des ses rencontres très bientôt.

I am still interested, albeit I am quite burdened with work these days. To get me really involved, there would have to be some research and/or publication[s] that I could elaborate in the context of this group-effort with you XP practionners. I find that Vincent's project has potential, far better in any case than the doing a calculator or nothing at all. I kinda fancied my own open-source project whose aim is to create an authoring system (IDE) that leverages everything Java has to offer in a simple architecture empowered by a english-like 'scripting' language, but [sigh] no one seems interested, so I'll harmonize with whatever project the group decides upon.

Même si j'ai cessé de fréquenter le groupe depuis ses débuts, je continue à suivre le mailing list en me disant que je reviendrais quand l'occasion d'appliquer XP au quotidien sera un peu plus réelle... Comme je viens de perdre mon emploi en ASP (apparemment, l'économie ne se porte pas bien partout à Montréal) et que je suis plutôt à la recherche d'activités informatiques, je devrais donc assister aux prochaines rencontres. D'abord, parce que j'ai envie de me plonger dans un milieu un peu plus inspiré à la XP; ensuite, parce que je recherche des occasions pour renouveller mes pratiques et mon bagage. Je serais donc bien intéressé aussi à donner de mon temps pour un projet Open Source intéressant en échange de ce que je pourrais y apprendre.

My comments are a mix of the one's from Iain and StephaneLussier. I've been at the very first meetings (2 or 3 times...can't remember). I've always kept an eye on the list. I don't really have time to collaborate to a project, so I think such projects could be discussed outside the "normal meetings". I think an idea to rejuvenate the group is to call all the lurkers on the mailing list to come and share what they have to say. The leaders of the group are important to me: they set the mood of the meetings. I remember going to meetings when JeanMarcHeneman was there: he was entertaining :) I might go at this meeting. It would be a shame for the group to die (why? I have no clue ;) )

Je ne suis plus venu depuis un petit temps. Je pense que Jean-Marc était très à l'écoute de tous et qu'il était possible à tous de s'exprimer au sein du groupe. J'ai sans doute eu peur que cela ne soit plus trop pareil. A tort sans aucun doute. J'ai décidé de mettre le groupe de côté pour l'instant. Le projet open-source (XP tools for JIRA) ne m'intéressait pas vraiment. A quoi pourrait bien me servir un outil qui s'intègre dans un autre; un autre qui semble propriétaire, payant et que je n'ai pas encore eu l'occasion d'utiliser? De mon point de vue, participer à des réunions XP et s'investir dans un projet comme celui-ci semble se télescoper maladroitement. Un autre syndrome du jeune père de famille, je suppose. ;-)

Je pense que le noyau dur du groupe pourrait encore s'améliorer au niveau de l'écoute ... Pourquoi ne pas essayer de mieux gérer les temps de paroles, de mieux accueillir les nouveaux et de leur laisser un peu plus de place.

En ce qui me concerne, le surplus de rencontres ne me fut pas très bénéfique. ... Il est vrai que je n'en ai d'ailleurs jamais vraiment compris la raison.

Virant vers l'extrême pour un temps, je me demande parfois si parler d'XP est si intéressant que cela ... Utiliser XP c'est super génial mais en parler ... On pourrait dire cela de bien des choses et finalement on pourrait bien parler de n'importe quoi avec passion. N'empêche cela devient d'autant plus difficile que peu d'entre nous utilise XP professionnellement.

Enfin, J'aimais beaucoup les petites présentations qui débordaient bien souvent du cadre.

J'espère bien tous vous revoir bientôt, accrocher nos lunes et discutailler un soir d'été.

I agree with Bob that an structure to each meeting will (perhaps) improve the focus (and the interest), but I think it could be even a basic structure like: "next meeting we will discuss about topic X, or we will do activity X". If presentations are available, they're welcome, but if they aren't never mind, we will still have something planned to do.

Perhaps a change in the meeting format would help?

I like the formal presentations given by the Groupe d’Utilisateurs Agile and the informal discussion at the Montreal XP Group meetings. Changing the meeting format so that it includes both formal presentations and the opportunity for lots of discussion (preferably over beer) would combine the best elements of both meetings.

So, does the Café Veranda have a meeting room in back...?

Speaking of the Café Veranda as our location, I would like to stress the fact that the music is often too loud for everyone to hear everyone [well] (or at all some times). A couple of meetings ago there was even a Karoake setup wih a loud and obnoxious host (which we did not stick around for). So perhaps we should give some thought about finding another "home away from home" that serves beer. Just a thought! PS: Jean-Marc's charismatic leadership is sorrowly missed these days. I wonder whether he will come back to the flock, hoping of course that he will. :)
