Martin Gardner

Martin Gardner (1914 - 2010) edited the Mathematical Games column for ScientificAmerican from its origination in 1956 until he retired in 1986.

He wrote a number of books, including the following:

"The Scientific American Book of Mathematical Puzzles and Diversions" (ISBN 0671245597 )

"The Magic Numbers of Dr. Matrix" (ISBN 0879752823 )

He also wrote several works of fiction.
