ExtremeIroning contrasts from ExtremeProgramming in that it attempts to make a relatively simple task more difficult rather than simplify a difficult task. This is interesting because many AntiPatterns for ExtremeProgramming become Patterns for ExtremeIroning and vice versa.

Examples of Patterns in XP that are AntiPatterns in XI

• DoTheSimplestThingThatCouldPossiblyWork is an AntiPattern in Extreme Ironing. The Extreme Ironer will DoTheMostComplexThingThatCouldPossiblyWork. Iron while suspended on a rock face, canoeing down a river or riding a bike are good examples.

• OnceAndOnlyOnce is also an AntiPattern. If you Iron whilst skiing down a mountain, next time do a quarter on the way up, a quarter on the way down then repeat on another mountain.

Examples of AntiPatterns in XP that are Patterns in XI

• RequirementsTossedOverTheWall. Never mind if the clothes won’t be ironed effectively, using an unplugged iron in free-fall does fine.

• KitchenSinkDesign If you can wash the dishes whilst ironing on a surf board, go ahead….
