Cider House Rules

Cider House Rules by John Irving

ISBN 0679603352 In The Cider House Rules, the owner of an apple orchard posts a set of rules for safety the migrant laborers must follow when they're working in the cider house. Year after year, the list of rules is carefully re-typed and re-posted.

WARNING: egregious spoiler below.

At the end of the novel, it's revealed that most of the workers are illiterate and none has ever paid any attention to the list.

This might be unsettling for managers who impose various methodologies and practices on their teams.
