Analogy As Wish Fulfilment

"I want to be a jazz musician, but I write computer programs. Therefore, writing computer programs is like playing jazz." This sort of illogic seems to be a natural feature of being human. But I wonder how many great advances have been discovered accidentally as a result of it?
